Book producers, also known as packagers, are similar to independent producers in film and television; instead of shows, we make books for publishers, corporations, nonprofits, and others. Book producers perform all of the creative and production functions commonly performed by agents and publishing houses, with the exception of marketing, sales, and distribution.
Print Matters works with publishers, authors, corporations, and nonprofits. Here’s how. . .
Publishers work with Print Matters in several ways. Publishers hire us to work with authors on projects already under contract to make them books. As publishing houses streamline their staffs but still have to produce the same number of books, they increasingly turn to book packagers for help. Sometimes when a publisher finds that a book is running late and must get out on a very tight schedule, they will outsource the project to us to shepherd the book through to completion.
Print Matters also develops original book proposals that we pitch to editors at publishing houses. We typically sell projects to publishers based on a proposal and produce the book only once the project has been sold. Depending on the arrangement, we may deliver as a final product to the publisher a polished manuscript, printer-ready files, or finished books. Tasks we typically handle include writing the proposal, pitching the project to publishers, negotiating the contract, commissioning writers, editing the text, acquiring art or photos, designing the book, copyediting, proofreading, indexing, and often prepress and printing as well.
A publisher may also hire Print Matters to develop and execute in-house ideas. Teaming up with a producer is often the only way for busy editors to transform solid in-house ideas into actual books. Please click here to contact us for more information.
Authors with projects that need development work or fully conceptualized designs team up with Print Matters for the resources and know-how to turn a great idea into a sellable proposal. Pleaseclick here to contact us for more information.
Corporations, nonprofits, and other organizations looking to exploit their valuable brands count on Print Matters to help them develop books that will bear their names. Working with a book producer allows these groups to maintain a high level of control over how their name is handled. Please click here to contact us for more information.
